Junior Championship

David Sarson became the first club champ of the year on saturday 7th May, winning the Junior Club Championship by 3 shots from runner up Joe Lawlor. David shot 76 and 78 for a gross total of 154 in the 36 hole event. Josh Hughes led the way following a fantastic first round score of 73. However disaster struck on the the second round which put him out of the running. Joe Lawlor took the Nett prize, with Sophie Thompson finishing 2nd nett only 1 shot behind. The Juniors have a home match against Aston Wood this Sunday.

Wishaw Teams Update

The Wishaw Golf Club teams have been enjoying a good start to the 2011 season. The Junior Team defeated last years Sutton & District League Champions Handsworth 3.5 – 0.5 at home in their first game of the season. The team consisted of Joe Lawlor, Tom Williams(C), Josh Hughes, Sean Kelly, Blaine Guiney & Sophie Thompson. Their next fixture is a home tie with Aston Wood on Sunday 15th May. The Scratch Team have also got off to a flying start with 2 wins out of their opening 3 games of the season. The first game was played at home against Little Lakes, with a solid 7 – 1 home win the perfect start to the new season, including winning debut performances from Ben Stokes and Ian Atkinson. Next up was a difficult away game against Cleobury Mortimer, who themselves had won both their two opening home games 8 – 0. Although the team suffered a defeat, they were far from disgraced with a final score of 5.5 – 2.5. The game also marked another debut victory, this time for new boy Tom Garner. The 3rd game was another tricky away game. This time Stratford Oaks played host. Wishaw won the game 4.5 – 3.5, with fantastic wins in particular from Joe Lawlor & Tony Cox. The away win leaves Wishaw in 2nd place on 2 points behind division leaders Gaudet Luce on 3 points. Congratulations to both teams for such a good start to the season. Long may it continue.

Scratch Team Cup

The first ever Scratch Team Cup was played for at Wishaw on Saturday 26th March by members of the Scratch Team Squad. 15 players took part in the scratch stableford format, including 4 new players to the squad, Ian Atkinson(4), Tom Garner(8), Tom Downey(9) & Colin Sarson(9) who although ineligible for the cup still took part in the event. Junior member Joe Lawlor won the Cup with 29 points. Joe plays off a handicap of 6, and was a regular member of the team last year.

Men’s Winter Eclectic Result

Following 4 months of intense winter eclectic action, it was last years gross winner that have once again finished top of the table. Steve Gibbs took the gross with a score of 52, 1 shot more than last years 51. It was a tight affair with Martin Ashton 2nd on 53 and Lehel Balint 3rd with 54. However, Lehel did manage to take the Net Prize with a net 41, only beating last years winner Fred Allen with a better Back 9. Congratulations to our winners, and our thanks to all the competitors in helping raise money for the Captains Charity.

Annual Handicap Review

It is the requirement of the Unified Handicapping System that the Club Handicap Committee review the handicaps of all players each year between January and March based on the returned scores of the previous year. The review for the Mens section has been completed, with alterations shown on the Handicaps Board. Those of you registered on the HowDidIDo website, will have been sent an E-Mail regarding any alteration. The review of the Ladies section is currently being undertaken and will be completed shortly.

Scratch Team Fixtures

The fixtures for the 2011 Scratch League season are available on the Midland Scratch League page in the members area. We are still waiting to hear back from Little Lakes as regards to the matches with them.
